You might remember BYD Yangwang U9 which debuted a couple of years ago as the vehicle that featured DiSus-X intelligent body control system that could perform rhythmic body movements (basically dance) and then it also stole the limelight by jumping in the air to avoid potholes, making the world gawk at it.

Now, a more extreme version of this Megacar called, BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme, has just made headlines as the world’s first production car to cross the 500 km/h speed barrier on open roads ever. Yangwang U9 Xtreme did it by clocking 503.17 km/h in Abu Dhabi, UAE, marking a historic milestone and has been awarded with a Guinness World Record.

BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme – 503.7 Km/h Top Speed

There are sportscars, supercars and hypercars in the world, but BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme is a Megacar, generating more than 1 MW of power (1,341 bhp). In fact, Yangwang U9 Xtreme is a multi-Megacar because it is rated at a peak power of 2,977 bhp, based on BYD’s 1200V e4 (Yi Si Fang) platform.

There are four motors powering Yangwang U9 Xtreme delivering 2,977 bhp of peak power and they can touch and bonkers 30,000 RPM. Combined, they deliver 1,200 bhp per tonne (power : weight ratio) and the torque vectoring system negates conventional axles and this system can adjust parameters at 100 times per second.

U9 Xtreme is a more performant version of BYD Yangwang U9 and it gets a host of updates in terms of aerodynamics to prevent it from flying, basically. These include a large carbon fiber front splitter, a dual-channel hood, tall swan neck rear spoiler and a massive diffuser. Yangwang U9 Xtreme gets unique graphics too and production is limited to just 30 units worldwide.

Last year in September, Yangwang U9 Xtreme locked 496.22 km/h top speed at Germany and then it clocked a sub 7 minutes lap time at Nurburgring Nordschleife (6m 59.157s), becoming the first mass produced electric supercar to achieve it. The new record was achieved at Abu Dhabi, UAE and it outdid itself by 6.95 km/h breaking the 500 km/h barrier at 503.17 km/h top speed.

80 kWh Battery, 30C Discharge

Powering BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme is an 80 kWh battery pack featuring a 30C discharge rate, this allows the battery to send enough juice across the 1200V and 1000A architecture to power four motors rated at 2,977 bhp.

In the video, we can see the professional driver warming up the tyres and increasing grip and traction for around a minute. And then he maintained the throttle around mid position till the vehicle reached 380 km/h and then he gunned it with full pedal to the metal till Yangwang U9 Xtreme hit 503.17 km/h top speed.
