Mamata All India Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee on Saturday said that BJP supporters attacked his Kalighat Road residence in the early hours of the day, alleging that the incident was the seventh attempt on his life in the last six months. The allegation came amid reports of a late-night clash between BJP and TMC supporters outside his residence, following which police intervened to bring the situation under control.
Banerjee alleged that BJP supporters pelted stones at his house around 2 am after conducting continuous reconnaissance of the premises for two days. He also accused the judiciary of failing to intervene despite repeated attempts on his life.
"After two days of continuous recce, this is how BJP hooligans attacked my house at 2 AM today. Watch the footage and see for yourself," Banerjee said in a post on X.
Meanwhile, hours after the attack, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Abhishek Banerjee's residence and condemned the incident. She alleged that the BJP had brought in hooligans from outside who, with police assistance, attacked the TMC MP's residence and created a disturbance.
The Diamond Harbour MP shared two videos. In the first video, a man is seen striking the gates of a building with a bamboo stick. Several Trinamool Congress (Mamata faction) flags can be seen atop the building. Notably, Banerjee's Kalighat residence also serves as one of the party's oldest offices.
In the second video, a mob is seen throwing various objects into the building. A few police personnel are also seen intervening and pushing the crowd away.
Posting the two videos, Banerjee wrote, "If this is what can happen to an elected Member of Parliament, imagine the plight of the common man in WB.”
The TMC MP further alleged that law and order had completely broken down, with hooligans taking over the streets. He claimed that neither the police nor the judiciary had taken any action
"Hooligans are running riot across the state because the judiciary continues to turn a blind eye. Thank you, Milords, for remaining mute spectators!" Banerjee added.
"This is the seventh attempt on my life in the last six months. Yet, there has been no police action and no judicial intervention," he said.
The incident also led to a confrontation between Banerjee and the police outside his residence. The TMC MP also staged a brief sit-in protest, or dharna, following the altercation. Police personnel intervened as supporters of the BJP and TMC clashed in the area.
Meanwhile, the Kolkata Police have decided to strictly enforce Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) outside Abhishek Banerjee's residence following last night's clash. The provision had already been imposed in the surrounding area since October.
ABHISHEK BANERJEE ALLEGES SURVEILLANCE BEFORE ATTACK
The allegations of the attack came after Banerjee raised concerns about unidentified individuals conducting reconnaissance of his office and residence over the preceding two days.
In an earlier post on X, the TMC MP claimed that some individuals had been keeping watch on the premises and that their motorcycle registration number had been identified.
"For the past two days, a few unidentified individuals have been conducting reconnaissance of my office and residence. The registration number of their motorcycle is mentioned below. When confronted, they claimed to be police personnel," he wrote on X.
Questioning the alleged surveillance, Banerjee asked why the state police were monitoring the office and residence of an elected Member of Parliament and who had authorised such an operation. He also drew the attention of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Kolkata Police, the Union Home Ministry and West Bengal Police to the matter.
The MP also demanded an immediate and thorough enquiry to establish the identities of the individuals, identify who had sent them and uncover the motive behind what he described as a suspected conspiracy.
BJP MINISTER MOCKS ABHISHEK BANERJEE
Reacting to Abhishek Banerjee's claim that his residence was attacked and goons tried to kill him, West Bengal Minister and BJP leader Dilip Ghosh mocked the TMC MP, questioning who would want to kill him.
"This is the first time we’ve seen a politician’s birthday being celebrated on the footpath. If someone creates a disturbance, there is bound to be a backlash. Besides, who has the time to kill Abhishek Banerjee? There is nothing left for them to say or do, so they are attempting to mislead people by bringing up this issue," Ghosh said.
