The residence of Abhishek Banerjee, leader of Mamata All India Trinamool Congress and Diamond Harbour MP, located in Kalighat area of Kolkata, was attacked in the early hours of Saturday (November 7, 2026).
Mr. Banerjee shared the video of the attack on his social media handle claiming that this was the seventh attempt on his life in the last six months. He blamed “BJP hooligans” for the attack.
“After two days of continuous recce, this is how BJP hooligans attacked my house at 2 a.m. today. Watch the footage and see for yourself... This is the seventh attempt on my life in the last six months. Yet, there has been no police action and no judicial intervention,” the Trinamool leader posted on social media.
In the video shared by Mr. Banerjee, a mob is seen attacking the house with sticks and tearing banners on shops next to the house. A few police personnel in uniform are seen pushing away the mob.
Clashes break out
On the occasion of the MP’s birthday on Saturday (November 7, 2026), his supporters gathered in front of his house since the early hours of Saturday. A group of BJP supporters appeared on the scene and started shouting slogans, “thief, thief”. Photographs of the Trinamool leader, cutouts and banners hung with birthday wishes were torn. When Trinamool supporters tried to stop this, an argument started between the two camps, and clashes broke out. Mr. Banerjee came out of his house and met his supporters, some of whom had sustained injuries. He also sat in protest with his supporters. “There is a conspiracy to attack me and kill me,” he alleged.
Kolkata Police enforced prohibitory orders under Section 163 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) outside Mr. Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat area.
Mr. Banerjee said that “if this is what can happen to an elected Member of Parliament, imagine the plight of the common man in West Bengal”. “Hooligans are running riot across the State because the judiciary continues to turn a blind eye. Thank you, Milords, for remaining mute spectators!” he said.
Earlier on Thursday (November 5) evening, the nephew of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said that the Trinamool lost elections to the Supreme Court and not to the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Later in the day, the Trinamool MP shared another video from his social media account claiming that a BJP worker slapped a police officer in plain clothes. “This is the BJP’s model of governance in West Bengal, where hooliganism rules and even police officers are not spared,” he said.
West Bengal Minister and BJP leader Dilip Ghosh dismissed the allegations as “drama” and asked, “Who has the time to kill Abhishek Banerjee?”. “The first time we are seeing birthday celebration on a leader being celebrated on footpath! If anyone creates a nuisance at night, then protest is expected. Who has the time to kill Abhishek Banerjee? There is nothing left, so attempts are being made to mislead people by using emotional rhetoric,” Mr. Ghosh asked.
Mamata Banerjee criticises attack
Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticised the attack on her nephew. “Who gave them the right to attack someone’s house at 3 a.m.? Who authorised such an attack? We have come here to lodge our complaints against the harassment, intimidation, and deliberate obstruction occurring in our locality,” she told reporters outsider her residence in Kalighat. Ms. Banerjee, who holds a Kali Puja at her residence every year, said even basic work in the neighbourhood is being disrupted, and people are being prevented from carrying out their religious celebrations peacefully.
She dared the ruling establishment to run a bulldozer over her. “How many bulldozers do you have? Bring them all. If you have the courage, come and run your bulldozers over my body. I am standing right here, and I want to see how far you can go. Run your bulldozer over my chest if you dare,” she threatened.
After the BJP came to power in May 2026, more than 20 FIRs have been lodged against the Trinamool Congress leader. Mr. Banerjee’s personal assistant Sumit Roy has been arrested and according to Trinamool leadership, he is being forced to depose against the Diamond Harbour MP. Mr. Banerjee has also raised questions about the recovery of cash of ₹1 crore from a party office in Diamond Harbour and said that it was an attempt to incriminate him.
