In his farewell address, Justice Natarajan reflected on his journey from being the first graduate and lawyer in his family to becoming a High Court judge.
He said that although his parents had not received formal education, they always encouraged him to pursue his dreams and supported him even though others discouraged him from pursuing the legal profession.
"My parents were uneducated. Among them, I became the first graduate and the first lawyer in my family, and thereafter I became a district judge, now before you as a High Court judge," Justice Natarajan said.
Reflecting on his judicial career, Justice Natarajan spoke about the responsibility of courts towards litigants as well as lawyers and emphasised that courts must ensure that all cases are decided fairly and everyone is given the opportunity to be heard.
"Judiciary is the last resort for citizens seeking justice and this institution in which the public placed their trust on it. We must, therefore, hear the advocates patiently, treat them courteously, and determine the rights in accordance with the law, rather than merely disposal of the case file," he said.
Speaking about his transfer from the Karnataka High Court, Justice Natarajan revealed that Kerala had been his first preference for a posting outside Karnataka.
He said that he always felt a spiritual connection with the State and was delighted when he was transferred to the Kerala High Court in 2025.
"Even after my transfer to Kerala High Court, I never felt that I was alone in the new State, as everybody showered love and affection on me in Kerala," the judge said.
Justice Natarajan concluded his farewell address by thanking his judicial colleagues, members of the Bar, court staff, family and well-wishers for their support throughout his career.
Chief Justice Soumen Sen also spoke at the event. He praised Justice Natarajan's judicial contributions and his commitment to the responsibilities of the judicial office.
Advocate General Jaju Babu described Justice Natarajan as an approachable judge with a welcoming atmosphere in his courtroom and said,
"Your smiling courtroom presence and willingness to hear all sides and communicate clearly helped reduce the intense stress faced by advocates, especially young lawyers," he said.
Kerala High Court Advocates Association President Peeyus A Kottam praised Justice Natarajan's patient and courteous approach towards lawyers, irrespective of their seniority and his willingness to ensure that everyone was given a fair opportunity to be heard.
Born on November 5, 1964, in Bengaluru, Justice Natarajan enrolled as an advocate in 1992 and began independent practice in 1995. He was appointed as the District and Sessions Judge in 2002.
He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court in November 11, 2018 and became a Permanent Judge in February 26, 2020.
He took oath as a judge of the Kerala High Court on May 9, 2025.
