Sony has revived its classic MDR-3 headphones, originally introduced alongside the first Walkman in 1979, with the launch of the new MDR-3R wired headphones. The updated model retains the original design while introducing a USB Type-C connection, an integrated microphone and in-line controls for modern smartphones and laptops.

The Sony MDR-3R headphones retain the slim metal headband and angular folding design of the original MDR-3. Weighing 38 grams, the headphones feature an adjustable metal headband and come with two sets of foam earpads in blue and orange.

Sony has also retained the original packaging and instruction manual design as part of its retro-inspired approach.

Sony MDR-3R headphones features

The MDR-3R headphones feature 23mm driver units developed using the original MDR-3 design drawings. Sony says the updated drivers aim to retain the original sound signature while offering a wider frequency range and improved bass reproduction.

The headphones feature an open acoustic design with sound holes on the earcups. According to Sony, this design is intended to deliver clear vocals and a sound profile suited to modern music. However, the open design can result in some sound leakage.

Unlike the original model, the new headphones feature a USB Type-C connection instead of a 3.5mm audio jack. The cable also houses an integrated microphone and three-button in-line controls.

Users can control music playback, skip tracks, adjust volume, answer hands-free calls and activate their smartphone's voice assistant using these controls.

The Sony MDR-3R does not support Bluetooth connectivity or active noise cancellation. It also does not carry an official IP rating.
