US vice president JD Vance has blamed the war on Iran for the Republican Party’s defeat in the 2026 midterm elections, saying many voters who backed Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election switched their support to Democrats. In a lengthy post on X on Wednesday, Vance said the main problem was not voter turnout but the decision by some Trump supporters to vote against Republicans.
Congressman Jim Jordan, a close ally of US President Donald Trump, is planning to run for the post of House Republican leader after speaker Mike Johnson cleared the way for a leadership contest, according to a CNN report citing two people familiar with the matter. US Representative Steve Scalise is also set to announce his bid, the report added.
Democrats have now seized control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, taking charge of the US Congress in a major setback for President Donald Trump. As results became clearer, Trump, earlier in the day, spoke to CBS News and congratulated Democrats on their victories saying that the two sides will work things out for the final two years of his term in office. “Otherwise, I'd just veto everything,” he said.

US midterm election results LIVE: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has welcomed the election of two Mexican Americans as governors of Texas and California, calling their victories a moment of recognition for people of Mexican origin in the United States.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Sheinbaum congratulated Texas governor-elect Gina Hinojosa and California governor-elect Xavier Becerra, both of whom secured historic wins in the November 3 US midterm elections.
“I would like to highlight the victory of two people of Mexican origin: California’s governor-elect (Xavier Becerra) and the governor-elect of Texas (Gina Hinojosa),” she said.
She added that both leaders had strong connections with their respective states as well as with Mexican communities.
Hinojosa's victory marks the first time a Latina has been elected governor of Texas. She is also the first Democrat to win the state's top executive office in decades. Becerra, meanwhile, becomes the first Latino elected governor of California.
“We are very pleased that Mexican Americans there have this participation and recognition,” Sheinbaum said.
