US midterm election results LIVE: The US midterm election 2026 has brought a significant political shift, with Democrats securing a majority in the Senate and making substantial progress towards gaining control of the House of Representatives. The results represent a serious blow to President Donald Trump and the Republicans, particularly as Democratic candidates achieved victories in several Republican strongholds....Read More
Democrats secured six additional Senate seats and overturned the results in more than a dozen House seats. Among the most notable developments were Democratic victories in Texas, Kansas and South Carolina, where the party had not elected senators in several decades. The party also gained Senate seats in North Carolina and Ohio, further strengthening its position in Congress.
The Democrats also recorded other important victories. Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia, Amy Acton in Ohio, Rob Sand in Iowa and Gina Hinojosa in Texas emerged victorious in gubernatorial contests, replacing Republican incumbents and shifting the political balance in their respective states.
The voter sentiment has indicated growing dissatisfaction with the Trump administration, particularly over the rising cost of living. According to the Associated Press Voter Poll, many Americans also expressed support for stronger congressional scrutiny of presidential decisions.
Zohran Mamdani says the left must now keep its “foot on the gas”
New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani from the Democratic Party on Wednesday said that the left must now keep its "foot on the gas". "Going through yesterday evening, it's a realisation that it's a new dawn in America," Mamdani told reporters, as quoted by CBS news. He further said that "this country has elected a new generation of leadership" in the midterms.
Speaking to Fox News in an interview broadcast on Wednesday, Trump attempted to play down the significance of the Republican defeats. He commended Democratic candidates for running effective campaigns, remarking that they had performed well, while suggesting that Republican candidates themselves were responsible for their poor electoral outcomes.
Trump dismisses concerns that he could face impeachment proceedings
Despite Democrats gaining control of Congress, Trump dismissed concerns that he could face impeachment proceedings. When questioned by reporters, Trump said he was “not even a little bit” concerned about impeachment. "Not even a little bit. I think it would destroy the Democrat Party if they did that... For what? Having a successful country?" he further told the reporters.
Vote counting is still underway, with the following races yet to be called:
US House: 48 races yet to be called
US Senate: 2 races yet to be called
Governor: 2 races yet to be called
US vice president JD Vance has blamed the war on Iran for the Republican Party’s defeat in the 2026 midterm elections, saying many voters who backed Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election switched their support to Democrats. In a lengthy post on X on Wednesday, Vance said the main problem was not voter turnout but the decision by some Trump supporters to vote against Republicans.

US midterm election results LIVE: Republican Congressman Thomas Massie has asked Pete Hegseth to step down, promising he would not reintroduce the impeachment effort if he did so, as pressure mounted on the Secretary of War after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in midterm elections amid anger over the Iran war. Hegseth, a polarising figure in US politics, has spawned adversaries even within his own Republican Party.
In September, Massie filed articles of impeachment against Hegseth, a major proponent of the war. Massie accused Hegseth of abusing his office by launching hostilities against Iran without Congress's approval. In an X post on Wednesday, Massie said: “There is one contingency in which I won’t reintroduce the articles of impeachment: Hegseth resigns.”
CNN reported Massie intended to trigger a House vote on the impeachment effort when federal lawmakers return for the next session, citing Republican insiders. It noted that the lawmakers anticipated the measure would successfully clear the chamber.

In addition to retaining many of these traditionally Democratic seats, the party wrested six from Republicans, whose tally fell to 15. US midterm election results LIVE: In Mississippi, provisional ballots could decide Senate race
US midterm election results LIVE: Democrat Scott Colom, a district attorney in north Mississippi, was leading the Republican incumbent, Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, by 1,138 votes, according to AP’s November 5 results. With an estimated 96 per cent of votes counted, Colom had 464,926 votes (49 per cent) and Hyde-Smith 463,788 (48.9 per cent).
Neither candidate has a majority as yet. Mississippi does not require one in a regular federal general election, so the candidate with the most votes will win without a runoff.
The remaining ballots could prove decisive. AP said several thousand provisional ballots remain to be counted before the state can finalise the result. Election workers hold back a provisional ballot when a voter’s eligibility cannot be confirmed at the polling station, and count it once eligibility is verified.
Mississippi calls them affidavit ballots. According to the Mississippi secretary of state’s office, a voter who cast one for lack of acceptable photo identification can still have it counted by showing that identification at the circuit or municipal clerk’s office within five business days of Election Day. This deadline is November 10.
US midterm election results LIVE: Why US Senate races in Alaska, Mississippi haven’t been called yet
US midterm election results LIVE: The Associated Press had not called the Senate races in Alaska or Mississippi by Thursday, two days after the US midterm election, and the counts in both states will run well into November for different reasons.
In Mississippi, election officials are still verifying and counting provisional and mail-in ballots. In Alaska, the initial count is incomplete, and a second stage of counting under the state’s ranked-choice voting system may follow.
Democrats have already won enough seats to control the Senate. The Alaska and Mississippi results will not decide which party runs the chamber, though each will change the size of the majority.
AP calls a race only when the trailing candidate has no remaining path to close the gap.
US midterm election results LIVE: Some Indian-Americans face defeat
US midterm election results LIVE: Republican candidates have suffered prominent defeats. Ramaswamy lost in Ohio, despite President Donald Trump’s endorsement and expectations that he could become the state’s first Indian-American governor.
His Democratic rival, Amy Acton, benefited from anger over Trump’s handling of the economy and the war in Iran. She also attacked Ramaswamy over his wealth, portraying the entrepreneur-turned-politician as an out-of-touch Trump ally. Ramaswamy faced criticism over an attack advertisement featuring Acton’s estranged mother, which drew condemnation from Republican party members.
Saritha Komatireddy’s bid to become New York’s attorney general also fell short. Despite drawing attention for her debate performances, she lost to incumbent Democrat Letitia James, 60 per cent to 40 per cent, in a state dominated by Democrats.

Aruna Miller, Maryland’s lieutenant governor, also won re-election to a second term.
Indian-American Democrats made gains at the state level as well. Nabeela Syed flipped a Republican-held seat in the Illinois state legislature, while Jyot Singh became the first Indian-American elected to the Georgia House of Representatives.

Pia Dandiya, an educator, won Florida’s 22nd Congressional District, defeating Republican Casey Askar 51.9% to 48.1%, with 99% of the vote counted. Her victory will expand the “Samosa Caucus”, a group of congressional representatives of Indian origin, as Democrats won despite Republican efforts to redraw Florida’s congressional boundaries.
Indian-American doctor-turned-politician Amish Shah was also poised to win Arizona’s 1st Congressional District. After narrowly losing in 2024, Shah held a seven-point lead over Republican Jay Feely, with 85% of the vote counted.
Veteran Democratic lawmakers Ami Bera and Pramila Jayapal won re-election comfortably. US midterm election results LIVE: South Korea to send navy assets to Middle East after US midterms
US midterm election results LIVE: South Korea is considering a broader military presence in the Middle East, including additional naval resources and an expanded maritime security mission, following US President Donald Trump’s earlier appeal for Seoul to help protect shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
On Thursday, the South Korean Defence Ministry announced that the government would seek parliamentary consent to extend the Cheonghae Unit’s area of operations beyond the Gulf of Aden to waters near Oman’s southern coastline.
The decision, months in the making, follows repeated pressure from Trump for allies to help secure the Strait of Hormuz.
