Microsoft is reportedly preparing a major Windows 11 overhaul for 2027, prioritizing performance and reliability over launching Windows 12.

Microsoft is reportedly preparing a substantial Windows 11 upgrade for 2027, potentially making version 27H2 the operating system's biggest update since 24H2 in 2024. The company is also developing new default wallpapers, while its broader efforts to improve Windows performance continue.

According to The Verge's Tom Warren, Microsoft intends to make Windows 11 27H2 a full operating system upgrade, replacing or substantially updating core components rather than simply enabling features already present on users' PCs.

Windows 11 27H2 Could Introduce Major Under-The-Hood Changes

This would mark a departure from Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2, both delivered through relatively small enablement packages. As Microsoft officially explained, these versions share an underlying servicing platform, allowing upgrades through small downloads and a single restart on eligible systems.

Windows 11 27H2 would instead resemble the more extensive 24H2 transition, potentially requiring more comprehensive compatibility testing. The report also suggests that Windows Insider testing could begin earlier than usual in 2027.

Performance improvements are expected to remain a major priority. Microsoft recently announced that its latest optimizations make Windows 11 up to 20% more responsive and multitasking up to 40% faster on systems with 8GB of RAM, according to internal measurements.

These improvements are already available on supported Windows 11 26H2 installations rather than being exclusive to the upcoming 27H2 release. Nevertheless, they illustrate Microsoft's renewed emphasis on operating system efficiency.

Another potentially significant development concerns Intel's Advanced Performance Extensions (APX). As we previously reported, experimental Windows 11 builds have begun exposing APX support, which could improve performance in appropriately optimized 64-bit applications on compatible future processors.

APX doubles the number of general-purpose CPU registers from 16 to 32, potentially reducing memory operations and instruction overhead. However, Microsoft has not confirmed that APX will ship with Windows 11 27H2, and the benefits will depend on hardware and software support.

New Default Wallpapers, But Windows 12 May Have To Wait

Beyond the underlying improvements, Microsoft is reportedly preparing to replace Windows 11's familiar Bloom wallpaper with a series of new designs, potentially unveiled during Microsoft Ignite 2026 later this month.

The new wallpapers reportedly feature folded, colorful shapes surrounded by clouds, with variations for consumer and commercial editions. Consumer designs could reflect gaming, productivity, creativity, and performance, while Windows 11 Pro would retain a color scheme closer to the original Bloom aesthetic.

A broader wallpaper rollout is reportedly planned for January 2027, ahead of the operating system's major annual update.

Interestingly, the report also suggests that Microsoft is focusing on improving Windows 11 rather than introducing Windows 12 next year. The company has not officially ruled out a new Windows version, however.

For now, Windows 11 27H2 looks increasingly likely to emphasize fundamental improvements in performance, reliability, and the overall user experience, although its final features, hardware requirements, and precise release date remain unconfirmed.
