The offences took place between 2005 and 2009 at different locations, including a radio station, a DVD recording set and Brand's home.
British comedian Russell Brand has been found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault involving four women by a jury at London’s Southwark Crown Court.
The 51-year-old was also cleared of two rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault. His wife, Laura, watched from the public gallery as the jury delivered its verdicts on Thursday.
The offences took place between 2005 and 2009 at different locations, including a radio station, a DVD recording set and Brand’s home.
Brand had denied all the charges, claiming that while he had been promiscuous in the past, all his sexual relationships had been consensual.
Bail Refused As Brand Awaits Sentence
Following the verdict, Judge Joel Bennathan warned Brand that he faced a “significant custodial term".
His lawyer, Ian Winter, asked the judge to grant him bail over the weekend, saying he wanted to put his affairs in order and say goodbye to his three young children.
However, the judge refused bail, citing concerns that Brand might not return to court for sentencing. He was remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced on Monday.
The maximum sentence for rape in England and Wales is life imprisonment.
Police Praise Women Who Came Forward
The Metropolitan Police praised the four women for their courage in reporting the offences.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said Brand had used his fame and influence to exploit women, adding that the conviction showed that no one was above the law.
Senior prosecutor David Roberts also said Brand had used his celebrity status to commit sexual crimes.
Separately, Brand reportedly faces further allegations involving two women, including an alleged rape of a 16-year-old schoolgirl. These claims are separate from the charges decided by the jury.
